Kicking off a successful revolution.

In 1933 Gilbert Briggs received a firm kick in the pants. That is, to say, the fabric firm he was working for found itself struggling -- and kicked him out. It proved to be a most valuable kick, which launched him in the right direction to establish the Wharfedale Wireless Works. Having become interested in how moving coil loudspeakers worked, Gilbert started experiments until he developed his own drive units which won a contest held by the Bradford Radio Society. This early fame and notoriety attracted a wise investor who gave Gilbert the opportunity he needed -- and Wharfedale was off and running.

Transforming a small coup into big business.

Business grew steadily, until WWII, when Wharfedale produced transformers for the Admiralty, and then went back to loudspeaker production in 1947. It was at this point that Wharfedale developed and produced a technically ambitious two-way corner loudspeaker and crossover network. This became extremely successful and set the path for even more success and expansion. In 1958, the opportunity arose to sell Wharfedale to Rank, and the company thrived throughout the busy 70s, producing millions of loudspeakers for an eager and appreciative market.

Keeping the Rock rolling.

In 1992 Wharfedale merged with the Verity Group, and Stan Curtis, famed designer of many Cambridge products, including CDI, joined Wharfedale as Managing Director. His deep understanding of audio design and marketing, parallels that of Gilbert Briggs and assures our continual ability to bring new revolutions in audio excellence to the marketplace.
